Final of the PSI tournament Sunday 9th September
The late summer 8 goal PSI tournament attracted a good entry of eleven teams, all keen to take home one of Cowdray Park’s most handsome trophies, and making it through to the Final were Ray Fine’s Las Estrellas and Richard Davis’s Clashleigh side.
The Las Estrellas team featured Tomi Beresford (0 goals) playing at number 2, Nick Pepper (3 goals) at 3 and South African 6 goaler Gareth Evans at Back. The Clashleigh side saw Archie Hirson (0 goals) at number 2, Jonny Good (5 goals) at number 3 and Tarquin Southwell (4 goals) at Back with Harry Hickmett playing in place of Richard Davis.
Clashleigh went ahead 2-1 in the first chukka but the second chukka saw Las Estrellas command the match, with Gareth Evans notching up 3 goals, while Tomi Beresford had the crowd cheering when he took the ball the length of the field to score an excellent goal and move Las Estrellas’s score on to 5-3 by the close.
Both teams scored just one goal apiece in the third chukka – both coming from 40 yard penalties but the fourth chukka saw a complete change in fortunes for Clashleigh with Tarquin Southwell and Jonny Good rallying to produce three goals against one penalty scored by Evans for Las Estrellas. Once again a Final had produced a draw and the match went into a fifth chukka. The action was swift and tough with Good penalised for barging into his opponent. A hit from the spot enabled Evans to pick up the ball and score for Las Estrellas two minutes into the chukka, giving victory to Las Estrellas on a score of 8-7.
As he was unable to be present, Peter Pattenden of People Skills International, who donated the trophy to Cowdray Park two decades ago, asked that Terry Hanlon should present the cup and prizes on his behalf. Ray Fine was delighted to accept the impressive silver PSI trophy.
In the subsidiary Final, Las Marias beat Pluma Negra 8-3.
