Cowdray Park Polo Club - The Centenary is a celebration of one hundred years of polo at Cowdray Park - universally recognised as the Home of British Polo.
I feel enormously privileged to be involved in this unique recollection from the first chukkas on the House Ground in 1910 when polo was very much a 'gentleman's sport' to the present day where the Club hosts the country's premier high goal tournament, featuring the world's top international players, The Gold Cup. The intervening years, punctuated by two World Wars, and highlighted by the legendary late Lord Cowdray who continued to play regularly in spite of having lost his left arm at Dunkirk.
Turning Horses
Brigadier Arthur Douglas-Nugent, (Polo Manager between 1989-2000), recalls the day when he suggested to Lord Cowdray that they play the 2nd high goal game of the day on Ambersham 2, having destroyed Ambersham 1 in the first game, 'They can't expect to play on a billiard table' was the gruff response and play promptly resumed on what resembled a ploughed field.
Anecdotes,(many of them much less tame than the one above) are coming in thick and fast and I welcome as many reminiscences as possible - fond, factual or risqué - as all will help to ensure this is a book which incorporates as many people and stories as possible. The aim is to produce a beautifully illustrated book that is as much a good read as an historic compilation of spectacular photographs of polo, players, ponies, and parties.
